Garry Taylor at Gunnamatta, Vic

Garry Taylor, Gunnamatta, Vic

Garry Taylor (affectionately known as GT or "Flea") sizing up the face at Gunnamatta in the mid-90s. Even decades later, there are only a handful of surfers who could come close to shredding a wave like GT.

I spoke to our shaper Simon Forward—a great surfer in his own right—about this photo. He recalls surfing with GT down at the Second Carpark when the two of them returned at the end of their competitive careers to compete in a Peninsula Boardriders Club (PSC) event. Aerials were just becoming trendy at the time, and although GT wasn't known as an aerialist, he effortlessly popped two fluid, consecutive airs.

GT travelled the world surfing circuit for two years, placing in the top 33 with a couple of 9th-place finishes and three trials wins. Kadyn Fowler, our current number-one Peninsula surfer, recently told me just how incredibly difficult it is to make that transition when there are literally hundreds of hungry surfers pushing for the same opportunity.

These days, GT is a regular "frother" on the snow slopes at Mt Hotham, as is Kadyn’s younger brother, Liam.
